Most men who want more testosterone go straight at it.

Testosterone is not a standalone hormone you can only boost in isolation. It sits near the bottom of a production line, and everything above it has to be working first. If you don't understand the order, you'll spend years fixing the wrong link.

Here's the actual hierarchy and why the first piece of the puzzle is your thyroid, not your testicles.

Hormones Are A Cascade

Your steroid hormones, testosterone, DHT, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, cortisol are not made independently. They're built one from the next, down a branching assembly line and every one of them starts from the same raw material: cholesterol.

That's the first thing worth sitting with. The molecule you've been told to fear is the single substrate your entire hormonal system is built from. You can't build steroid hormones without the material they're made of.

But having the raw material isn't enough. Cholesterol sitting in the cell doesn't become testosterone on its own. It has to be converted and that first conversion is where the thyroid quietly runs everything.

The First Step – And Why It Needs Your Thyroid

The entire cascade begins with one reaction: cholesterol → pregnenolone.

This happens inside the mitochondria of your steroid-producing cells – in the adrenals, the gonads and the brain. Cholesterol is transported into the mitochondrion and an enzyme (CYP11A1) converts it into pregnenolone, the first hormone in the chain.

Here's the part almost nobody talks about: that first conversion requires active thyroid hormone T3.

T3 is the throttle on the whole reaction. When thyroid function is low, this first step runs slow and everything downstream of it produces less. Thus less pregnenolone and therefore less DHEA, less testosterone, less DHT, less progesterone. You can eat all the cholesterol in the world and flood yourself with zinc, but if T3 is low, the assembly line barely turns over at the very first station.

This is the whole reason the sequence matters. Testosterone is four or five steps down the line. Thyroid governs step one. Fixing the top of the chain while the bottom is choked is why so many people "do everything right" and still feel no change.

Pregnenolone – The Mother Hormone

Pregnenolone is the parent compound for the entire steroid family. From it, the body branches in two main directions: toward DHEA and the androgens (testosterone, DHT) and toward progesterone and the cortisol pathway.

This is why pregnenolone and DHEA are two of the most reliable markers of biological aging. They peak in your late teens and decline steadily – roughly 2% a year – down to as little as 10–20% of peak by old age. And notice what declines with them: testosterone, immune strength, skin quality, memory, resilience. Aging, hormonally, is largely the slow starving of the top of this cascade.

So when you ask "how do I raise my testosterone," the deeper question is: Is the mother hormone above it being produced in the first place? And that depends on two things – enough cholesterol substrate and enough T3 to convert it.

The Two Ways The Cascade Gets Choked

Two forces quietly shut this system down. Both are extremely common in modern life.

1. A suppressed thyroid. T3 runs the first conversion, so anything that suppresses the thyroid suppresses your entire hormonal output. The big offenders: seed oils (they block the conversion of T4 into active T3 in the liver), fluoride in tap water (it inhibits thyroid peroxidase and displaces iodine), soy (the most potent dietary thyroid-peroxidase inhibitor there is) and simple iodine and selenium deficiency. Iodine and Selenium are the two minerals thyroid hormone is made and activated with. Subclinical hypothyroidism is the modern default. That means most men are running the entire steroid cascade at a fraction of capacity from the very first step.

2. The pregnenolone steal. This is the other drain and it's driven by cortisol. Under chronic stress, bad sleep, blood-sugar crashes, inflammation from seed oils, relentless psychological pressure, your adrenals demand cortisol constantly. To meet that demand, the body routes pregnenolone away from the DHEA/testosterone branch and down the cortisol branch instead. The mother hormone gets "stolen" for stress instead of spent on building you. So a stressed man isn't just high in cortisol – he's actively converting his testosterone-building material into stress hormone.

Put those together and you have the modern male hormonal profile: a choked thyroid throttling production at step one and chronic cortisol stealing what little pregnenolone does get made. No T-booster touches either problem.

Fixing It In The Right Order

The Primal approach doesn't chase testosterone. It rebuilds the cascade from the top, so the body makes its own, in order.

Supply the raw material: Cholesterol is the substrate for the entire system. Raw eggs, raw butter with every meal and raw cream give you unoxidized cholesterol in the form the body actually uses. Heating oxidizes cholesterol and reduces its availability. This is the foundation nothing else works without.

Unlock the thyroid so step one can run: This means removing what suppresses it. Remove all seed oils, soy and fluoride and supply what it runs on. Wild-caught fish and raw oysters deliver the two critical minerals together: iodine to make thyroid hormone and selenium to activate T4 into the T3 that drives the cholesterol-to-pregnenolone conversion. Without this, everything downstream stays throttled.

Stop the pregnenolone steal: Since the steal is driven by cortisol demand, you protect your hormone pool by lowering that demand. Keep blood sugar stable with healthy carbs through the day. Sleep deeply in the dark – the adrenals restore their steroid-producing capacity during deep slow-wave sleep, when cortisol is lowest. Get morning sun to set the cortisol rhythm correctly. Every night of poor sleep keeps cortisol high and the steal running.

Then the downstream nutrients matter. Zinc (raw oysters, organs, meat) for the testosterone-synthesis enzymes and for converting T to DHT. Natural creatine from raw red meat to shift the DHT-to-testosterone ratio in tissue. Vitamin D3 from fish and sun for the Leydig cells that actually produce testosterone. These are real – but they're the last links and they only pay off once the cascade above them is flowing.

The Point

You can't boost testosterone. You can only build the conditions under which your body produces it and those conditions start higher up the chain than your testicles.

Cholesterol feeds the system. The thyroid switches on the first reaction. Pregnenolone is the mother of everything below it. Cortisol is the thief that steals it. Get those right, in that order and testosterone rises as a consequence.
